Adazi Secondary school

Hello!

We are the biggest countryside school in Latvia, because in our school there are almost 1000 students! (quite a number!) The school is situated close to our capital Riga, we have army base close ( the biggest in the Baltics, nothing to do with the learning process, but still....), the longest river in Latvia the Gauja flows near.... We are proud of our beautiful environment and students!

We are a big school and many students are currently involved in various activities, including other European projects but only with different teachers. So, I am comperatively new in all this, apart from applying to Comenius funding for professional development in 2005. So far I have not done anything that "big" with my students! However, we are open to various ideas and since students are fluent in English and alreay have international experience, they highly appreciate communication with foreigners ( since I have organised some visits to my lessons involving my foreign friends...) and doing international things!

We are interested in variety of topics, probably some cultural, sports and health issues are the closest to us!

Vecpiebalga Secondary school

Our school is located in the little village - Vecpiebalga, 130 km from Riga. In the school there are about 300 students (6 to 18 years old).
At the moment we have one active Commenius project "My country through your eyes and through mine". It will end in summer 2012, after it we are ready for new one.
We are interested in other international projects and activities, too. Maybe Nord Plus.

Looking for new contacts,

Description of our school
Our school is situated in the beautiful nature and surroundings around Gjerrild - 12 km north of Grenaa – this is where you will find Efterskolen Helle. A school in which the community is based on equality. At Efterskolen Helle, we offer teaching that meets and responds to students with special needs in special education.
For the same reason Efterskolen Helle is a school without exams, and we create an environment for the students which is a refuge and a haven compared to the formal requirements imposed at other schools. Each student who completes a school year gets a certificate which describes their skills. A school in which the community is in focus and where visitation is based on equality.
At Efterskolen Helle teaching expectations and requirements are aligned with the individual level of development and functioning of our students.
At Efterskolen Helle we give the students ample opportunity to move forward and evolve through social interaction with peers, and we offer specially designed tutoring in creative and practical projects and workshops.

Values
Development
Everyone has a potential to develop academically, socially and personally, and we believe that the acquisition of new abilities and skills, gives individuals greater self-esteem and confidence. Through the formation of the whole person, we teach the individuals to have faith in their abilities and influence on their life situation. We are a school where the students experience human growth and prepare themselves for life. We are a school where the students develop self-management and become well-functioning people. Efterskolen Helle is a school that is characterized by development.
Cheerfulness
Happiness creates a better environment to deal with adversity and problems. Students feel joy when they learn that other people count on them and need them, and students experience joy in their meeting with school staff. We believe that happiness gives the individual a personal profit and pleasure of life. Once students experience joy, they want to express themselves and seek out the community. Happiness means joy and gratitude for life, and it describes the Grundtvigian understanding of the Christian faith.
Community
It is valuable to be part of a community. Therefore, we are a school where everyone actively participates in training activities and in open friendships. We are a school that is characterized by good friendship, and where there is no bullying. We are a school where it is natural to praise each other, help each other, talk nicely to each other and where there is room for everyone. In the community we are aware of each other, and we take responsibility for everybody’s wellbeing.

Padise Põhikool

I am coming from a small primary and secondary school called Padise Põhikool which is located in the small village of Padise, approximately 50 kilometers to the southwest of Tallinn. The school has approximatley 80 students grades 1 to 9. The website is as follows: http://www.padise.edu.ee . My email address is kvonramm@gmail.com.

I have just this year joined the school as an English teacher and can say that international exposure is not very strong at the school. I am an American now working full time at Padise Manor Hotel and Restaurant (www.padisemois.ee), located a stone's throw from the school and have started teaching at Padise Põhikool as the opportunity and need arose at the school. So I suppose my assignment as a teacher has created an international dimension for the school.

I absolutely think there is a lot of opportunity to develop English speaking international programs for the school. I would say all the projects which were described in the original section seem like great opportunities, as a first step student exchanges and an eTwinning project would be a major leap and opportunity for the children of Padise village.

See you next week!

Kind Regards,

Karl von Ramm
